Officials in Ukraine claimed they were repelling Russian forces who were still attempting to encircle Bakhmut, a now-destroyed eastern Ukrainian city that Moscow has been striving to seize for months.
Ukraine has promised to defend "fortress Bakhmut," but Russian forces are desperate to conquer the city, which has become a political prize as the fight drags on.
According to the Ukrainian general staff, "more than 130 enemy attacks" were repulsed on the previous day, notably in Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, and Avdiivka.
"The enemy's attempts to surround Bakhmut continue," it added on Sunday morning.
