In a story that has warmed hearts across the nation, a Florida family was joyously reunited with their beloved German Shepherd, Athena, on Christmas Eve after a harrowing nine-day search. Athena had gone missing from the Comer family’s home in Green Cove Springs on December 15, leaving the household devastated.
Determined to bring Athena home, the Comers launched a tireless search effort. They distributed physical and digital flyers, combed through hours of doorbell camera footage, and enlisted the help of dozens of community members. The search extended well beyond their neighborhood, drawing volunteers from Jacksonville and Saint Augustine who were eager to assist.
Despite their best efforts, hope of finding Athena before the holidays began to fade as Christmas drew closer. But in an unexpected Christmas Eve twist, Athena returned home on her own, stunning her family.
With incredible intelligence, the German Shepherd-Husky mix walked up to the family’s front door at 2:30 a.m., rang the doorbell, and pawed at the door. The emotional moment was captured on the family’s doorbell camera, and the Comers rushed to greet their long-lost pet.
"It was about 2:30 a.m. when she was ringing on the doorbell and pawing on the door," Brooke Comer, Athena’s owner, told WJAX. "I woke from it and saw her on the Ring camera."
Brooke attempted to keep the reunion quiet, but her four young children, awakened by the excitement, quickly joined in the joyous celebration.
Athena’s return brought immense relief and joy to the family. "She has not stopped whining or howling since she's come home. She’s found her voice now," Brooke shared.
The Comers plan to microchip and spay Athena in the new year to ensure her safety and prevent any future disappearances. Athena’s return has made this Christmas an unforgettable one for the family and serves as a heartwarming reminder of the enduring bond between humans and their pets.
