Scarlet Vas, known for her brief role in the hit Australian soap opera Neighbors, has addressed criticism surrounding her relationship and pregnancy with her stepbrother-turned-husband, singer Tayo Ricci.
The couple, who grew up as teenagers in Melbourne, became step-siblings when their parents got together. Despite their unconventional family dynamic, Vas and Ricci fell in love and tied the knot in Mykonos, Greece, in September 2023. Now, the 29-year-old actress is expecting their first child, a baby girl, but their relationship continues to draw criticism online.
Vas, however, remains unfazed by the backlash. “Honestly, it doesn’t affect us because we have each other,” she told news.com.au. The actress revealed she avoids reading negative comments but finds the occasional trolling “entertaining” and often disarms critics with humor.
The couple first caught the internet’s attention in 2021 when they revealed their romance in a viral video titled, “I fell in love with my bf’s best friend… who happens to be my step bro.” The video, which depicted a staged kiss with Vas’ then-boyfriend—allegedly Ricci’s best friend—watching on, sparked debate about their relationship. Despite the sensationalized nature of the clip, Vas insists their love is genuine.
“We’ve been together for 10 years and have just moved back to Australia after living in the US for the last five of those,” Vas shared. She clarified that they are not biologically related, emphasizing their stepfamily connection while keeping family details private out of respect for their parents.
Their relationship has also inspired Ricci’s music, including the song Strawberry on Ice, which he performed for Vas at their wedding. The couple said they direct curious or skeptical individuals to the track, which is a testament to their love story.
Despite the criticism, Vas and Ricci are focused on the future as they prepare for parenthood. “It’s been a long journey, and we’re thrilled to be starting this next chapter together,” Vas said, expressing excitement for their growing family.
