Venkatesh Iyer, the Kolkata Knight Riders' rising star, has smashed his maiden IPL century against the Mumbai Indians, in the Indian Premier League 2023 season. Iyer's blistering knock helped KKR set a formidable total of 185/6 in 20 overs, with Iyer scoring an unbeaten 107 off just 49 deliveries.
The left-hander's innings was laced with six boundaries and nine mammoth sixes, showcasing his power-hitting abilities. Iyer completed his century in the 18th over, becoming only the second player in the history of the franchise to score a ton after Brendon McCullum's 158 not out in the inaugural game of the league back in 2008.
After his remarkable knock, Iyer said, "Feels great, coming to Mumbai and a game is always special. Getting a hundred is even more special. I think the boys will defend this total. I want to play for the team, I am not going to think about the 16th over when I am in the 6th over, just try to focus on the present moment, don't want to think far too ahead."
Despite a good start in the powerplay, KKR struggled in the middle overs against the spin duo of Piyush Chawla and Hrithik Shokeen. However, Andre Russell's cameo in the final overs helped the visitors post a competitive total.
KKR will be looking to defend their total with the likes of Lockie Ferguson and Sunil Narine leading their bowling attack. "The cutters and slower balls are gripping, so we will look to exploit the conditions. Wickets will be key, if we get early wickets in the powerplay, we can put pressure on their middle order," Iyer said.
The young cricketer credited Abhishek Nayar, the team's assistant coach, for improving his game and personality. "I just go out there and do what has been done. Abhishek Nayar has been working with me, improving me not only as a player but also personality-wise," Iyer added.
Duan Jansen, who made his debut for Mumbai Indians, had a forgettable outing, giving away 53 runs in his four overs quota. With Iyer's maiden IPL century, KKR will be hoping to secure a win against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
