Amid the exponential surge in covid-19 cases, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd a pharmaceutical major announced that it will soon launch Merck’s antiviral Covid-19 pill at a price of rupees 35 per capsule. The company spokesperson stated that the capsule will be called “ Molflu”.
The pill Molnupiravir is an antiviral drug that has been approved by the Central drug standard control organization, for use during restricted emergencies. The approval of the antiviral drug came after witnessing a sudden jump in the Covid-19 cases.
According to the health minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, the antiviral drug will only be used during emergencies for the treatment of adult patients who are at a high risk of progression and mutation. Currently, the antiviral drug Molnupiravir is manufactured by 13 different companies across the nation.
The antiviral drug has received consent from several countries like the U.K and the U.S.A for the mild treatment of the Covid-19 symptoms. According to the guidelines these pills can be used only by those patients who have a high possibility of getting hospitalization due to the infection and that patient should have an oxygen level of 93%. Moreover, this antiviral drug is only authorized to use for adult patients showing severe symptoms, not for patients below the age of 18 years.
