Russia has reportedly removed a senior military commander for allegedly providing false information about the progress of its operations in eastern Ukraine. According to military bloggers and Russian media, Colonel General Gennady Anashkin, commander of the South Forces Group, was dismissed after making misleading claims about Russia’s advances near the Siversk settlement in the Donetsk region.
Russian media outlet RBC, citing unnamed sources within the Ministry of Defense, reported that Anashkin’s removal was part of a planned rotation. However, there has been no official statement from Russian authorities confirming the dismissal or the reasons behind it.
The decision comes amid intense fighting on Ukraine’s frontlines. Ukrainian army chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi described the current offensive as “one of the most powerful Russian offensives” since the start of the conflict. However, despite these efforts, progress in some regions has been sluggish. Military blogger Rybar, a prominent figure on Telegram, criticized the situation, saying, “Only the lazy did not write about the problems there: in general, it took the system about two months to respond to it properly.” Rybar also accused Anashkin of falsely reporting the capture of settlements near the frontline, labeling them as examples of “lies and unjustified losses.”
Other military bloggers echoed similar concerns, suggesting that inaccurate reports by multiple commanders have led to significant casualties among Russian troops. These bloggers, who often have insider connections within the armed forces or pro-Russian separatist groups in eastern Ukraine, have become a critical source of information since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
