The exhumation of bodies from the mass burial place was completed in the city of Izyum in the Kharkiv region, which was liberated from the Russian occupation. A total of 436 bodies were exhumed. Most of them have signs of violent death. Thirty of them have traces of torture. This was reported on September 23 by the head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Sinegubov. Most of the dead were civilians. Twenty-one of the dead were military. There are bodies with ropes around their necks, bound hands, broken limbs, and gunshot wounds. Several men have amputated genitalia. Such a mass burial is not the only one in Izyum. There are at least three other such places in the area. There are also similar burials in other liberated cities of the Kharkiv region. Currently, such places are inspected and denied.

The Russian troops fled from Izium on September 10, leaving a lot of military equipment behind. On September 15, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that after the liberation of Izium of Kharkiv Oblast, mass burials of people were discovered in the city. On September 19, 146 bodies of the dead were exhumed from the improvised cemetery in Izium. Women and children are among them. The Russians tortured people in the police station and other places.

Law enforcement officers found bodies of men with tied hands, broken jaws, amputated genitalia, and other traces of torture. Some sources reported that the United Nations would send a mission to the site of mass graves in Izium, which were discovered after the city's liberation from Russian occupation.
