A fire broke out in the mosque of the Islamic Center in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Wednesday, 19 October. It started after the builders repaired the dome. The fire started when the workers repairing the dome wanted to put plywood on top and melt the roofing membrane with a torch. The crown of the Grand Mosque of the Islamic Center collapsed due to the fire.
Panic erupted in the crowd as the dome collapsed, accompanied by frantic screams. Eyewitnesses say that the worshipers were in the mosque when the fire broke out.
According to preliminary information, the fire started due to welding work on the mosque's dome. But the fire department is yet to ascertain the cause of the incident.
One of the men tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, but the fire spread, and eventually, the entire dome of the Islamic Center's mosque caught fire. Later the structure collapsed. Rescuers immediately reached the spot. Now they put out the fire.
